- Robert Hobden
The death of Robert Hobden, of Preston, which took place at the Galt hospital on Sunday, March 11, has caused sincere regret among his many friends and while not unexpected, his passing has removed one who displayed extraordinary pluck and cheerfulness in the face of an agonising and incurable malady. Deceased was born on the estate of Lord Ashburnham, in the county, of Sussex, England, on May 8, 1855, coming to Canada some 30 years ago, residing in Preston a greater portion of this time. Valuing the best traditions in the art of gardening and trained by clever English teachers, he applied his skill to many of the private properties in Preston. No more lasting tribute to his artistic capabilities can be found than in our beautiful Central park. He found it an unattractive barren field, and by his care and loving work transferred it into a vision of beauty and delight for the people and their children. The deceased was a member of St. John's church and the funeral service will be conducted by Rev. IL Herbert, at A. Grieve's funeral parlor on Tuesday, at 2.30 p.m., from thence to Preston cemetery.
