- Hummell, Vernon Private. Enlisted October 15, 1915 with 118th Battalion of North Waterloo and left for England the following January. Born at Bloomingdale, June 24, 1893; lived at Kitchener for a number of years. He had been in France only a short time when he was killed in action September 12, 1918 by shrapnel during the Drucourt-Queant drive. He is buried in the British Military Cemetery at Vis-en-Artois, Grave 19, Plot 2, Row B. His widow, Mrs. Mynella Hummell, lives in Preston. Mrs. Ward Roedding of Kitchener is his sister.1a

- Pte. V. Hummel Killed.
Pie. Vernon Hummell, who was reported killed in action on Sept. 2nd. 1918. later reported wounded, is now officially reported as having been killed in action on Sept. 2nd. 1918.
Pte. Hummell met his death during The De.... Queant drive in France. [according to word received by his widow from the War Department. He as advancing with his Company in the attack and was struck by shrapnel and instantly killed. He was buried three days later in a British military cemetery at Vis-en-Artois.
The late Pte. Hummell was born in Bloomingdale on June 24th. 1893 and resided in Kitchener for a number of years. He enlisted with the 118th Battalion in Kitchener on October 15, 1916, and left for England in January, and was only a short time in France until he gave his life for his country and the cause of Freedom.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mynetta Hummell, who resides in Preston, and his father, Mr. Phil. Hummell, and sisters, Mrs. Ward Roedding. Kitchener; Mrs. Will Goebel, New Hamburg, and brothers, Herb, Alex., Roy and Ralph, all of whom reside in Toronto.
Pte. Walter Gatehouse has returned from France a convalescent. Pte. Gatehouse enlisted on the 17th of January, 1915, with the 34th Battalion in Galt.

Pte. Vernie Hummel Killed In Action
Was One of 118th Boys
The official news received by Mr. Philip Hummel that his son, Pte. Vernie Hummel, had been killed in action on Sept. 2nd. 1918 was correct.
Vernie enlisted with the 118th Batt. and after getting overseas was transferred to the 47th. Batt.
The late soldier was a bright intelligent young man and his kind disposition won many friends one letter written by him to his sister on the 31st. of Aug., stated he was in the best of health, but was engaged in one of the heavy battles, and it was there that he met his death.
Vernie had lived here nearly all his life, and was educated at St. Marys School, and the R.C. Church. He was 24 years of age and was married to Miss Mynetta Pieffer of Preston.
He leave to mourn his loss a loving wife, his father Mr. Philip Hummel and the following brothers and sisters Mrs. Ward E. Roedding, Mrs. William Goebe, New Hamburg, Ralph, Roy, Herb. and Alex, of Toronto.
The following letter from the Battalion Chaplain tells how the brave boy met his death -
France, Sept. 16, 1918. Dear Mrs. Hummel
I am writing to share you of the sincere sympathy of our whole battalion with you in the death of your husband, Pte. V. Hummel, who was killed in action Sept. 2nd. 1918, during the heavy fighting in which the Canadians broke through the Drucourt Queant line, and won back so many miles of territory from the Germans.
He was advancing with his company in the attack when he was hit by shrapnel and instantly killed. His body was buried three days later in the British Military Cemetery at Vis-en-Artois, in grave 19 Plot 2, Row B.
His personal effects are being forwarded to you through the regular channels, but please do not look for them before the New Year. I have known your husband for a long time, and we are all sorry to have lost him. He was always the same brave soldier, even under trying conditions and one feels that for such as him the Mercy of Almighty will be great. May the knowledge of his self sacrifice keep you to bear your loss and in the Communion of Saints may God give you comfort.
