ENDEARED HIMSELF BY MANY ACTS OF BENEVOLENCE.
ONCE ELECTED AS SCHOOL TRUSTEE BY DEMOCRATS.
FUNERAL TOMORROW.
Dr. John F. Rudell succumbed yesterday morning to dropsy after an illness of five months. In the death of Dr. Rudell the East End loses one of Its most picturesque characters, and a man whose open-handed generosity caused him to be loved by all with whom he came in contact. Declining health for the past year had forced Dr. Rudell to give up active practice, and for the past five months he had been confined to his bed. He was fifty-nine years of age. Death occurred yesterday morning at 7:45 o'clock at the residence, 1011 East Jefferson street.
In Politics at One Time.
Born in Preston, Ontario, Dr. Rudell came to the United States when a youth and lived in Cleveland, 0., for some time. Later he came to Louisville and served as a drug clerk. The young man had a natural aptitude for medicine, and shortly after his advent in this city took up his favorite study at the Louisville Medical College. He was graduated from that institution, winning for himself the honor of being president in both the classes of pharmacy and medicine. It was not long after taking up the practice of medicine that he became a well-known figure in local politics. His personal magnetism and a propensity toward kindnesses to his friends soon won him a large following, and he was elected to membership on the School Board on the Democratic ticket. At the end of his term he refused to accept a renomination, and since that time has been content to practice medicine.
Philanthropist Physician.
Despite limited means at his disposal. Dr. Rudell was known throughout the entire East End as being generous to a fault. Medical services to the poor were his favorite hobby, and in many cases where a family in destitute circumstances was unable to procure proper medicines and sustenance for a patient, Dr. Rudell took upon himself the responsibility.
On one occasion. it is related, he was called from his home on a bitterly cold night to attend a child of a woman in destitute circumstances. He found both the woman and the little patient suffering from the cold in squalid quarters and both in need of food. Unable to arouse a groceryman on account of the lateness of the hour, Dr. Rudell made his way to his own home, several blocks distant, secured an armload of delicacies and with a man he had met on the way, following him with sufficient fuel to the woman and child through the night, again returned to the miserable room and furnished both mother and sick child with comforts. It is also told that on many occasions he refused to accept payment for medical services from families whom he; considered unable to pay for them.
Long in Louisville.
Dr. Rudell spent thirty-five years In Louisville and during that period has been a resident of the East End. He was prominent in Masonic circles, being a member of Preston Lodge, No. 281. Besides three daughters, Misses Mamie, Lula and Margaret Rudell, and one son, C. J. Rudell, Dr. leaves three brothers and three sisters. They are Mrs. C. H. Hunt, of Louisville, Mrs. Ruby Pepper, of Chicago: Mrs. Catherine Snowball. of St. Charles, Canada: Kohn Rudell, of Buffalo, Robert Rudell, of New York. and Galt Rudell, of Canada. The two brothers from New York will arrive this morning.
Carl J. Rudell will be graduated from Louisville Medical College on July 31.
Funeral services will be held at the residence, 1011 East Jefferson street. at 3 p. m. and will be under the auspices of the Masons. The Rev. Theodore F. John will preach the sermon. Nephews of Dr. Rudell will act as pallbearers.
