Notes |
- FOLSOM. HUGH R. was born in New Hampshire on Nov. 20, 1800. When he settled in Preston is unknown, but as he is listed in the Canada Museum of January 12, 1839 as a pathmaster for Waterloo Township, he must have resided there long enough to be regarded as a responsible person.
Der Deutsche Canadier of January 26, 1844 carried a letter complaining of his arbitrary attitude as Chairman of the School Commissioners in ruling against the use of German in the schools.
This was followed on February 2 by a snide comment that his dislike for the German language aid not prevent him from practising among the German people.
A rebuttal by "a school commissioner" appeared on February 9th and nothing further was heard of the matter. An account of an accident, where Dr. Folsom was called, appeared on October 9, 1845 which said thanks to his skill a good result was obtained."
The census of 1851 gave his age as 51, his wife's name as Phybia (?), they had seven children, - several years later in the 1871 census he had four children living with him.
No other mention of him was made until the notice of his death appeared in the Berliner Journal on December 11, 1890; Died. December 6, in Preston, Dr. Hugh R. Folsom, aged 90 years 1 month and 1y days.
Scant mention after all those years.
