      Word was received here to-day of the death, at Galt, of William E. Hindmarsh, at one time bandmaster of the 14th P.W.O.R. Deceased was thrice [twice] married, his last wife being a sister of Ernest Roberts, of the city engineer's department. He was sergeant of the Royal Canadian Rifles band during the visit of the Prince of Wales to Canada.

      The Late W. H. Hindmarsh.

      William H. Hindmarsh, one of Galt's well-known musicians, died yesterday in his 71st year. Deceased was an old military man, having joined the Royal Canadian Rifles in England in 1842. The same year he came to Canada, and for 41 years was connected with Canadian military life. He served for 21 years as band sergeant at Niagara, London, Kingston and Montreal. Subsequently he was bandmaster of the 14th Battalion, band, Kingston; the 25th Battalion band, St. Thomas; the 24th Battalion band, Chatham; and the 29th Battalion band. He leaves one son, George, a reporter on the Brooklyn Eagle. Henry Hindmarsh, a son, died some time ago, and his widow, who was a daughter of the late Hiram Comfort, City Assessor, of St. Thomas, was left $90,000. Her sister, Mrs. Toogood, and other relatives are now comtesting the will.

      A MUSICIAN'S LIFE CLOSED.

      Prof. Hindmarsh's Journey Ended- Reached the Three Score Years and Ten Mark

      William H. Hindmarsh died at his home, North Water street, last night. He had been ailing for quite a long time and before death did come, it was known to his friends that the parting would have to take place soon. He was aged 70 years, 11 months and 6 days.

      Professor Hindmarsh was born in the parish of Frendsburg, town of Stroud. Kent County, England. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Rifles on April 20th, 1842, coming to Canada on July 2nd, 1842. He served twenty- one years as band sergeant, being stationed at Niagara, London, Kingston, and Montreal. He obtained his discharge in 1865. He was bandmaster of the 14th Battalion, Kingston, for a certain number of years, resigning that position to take charge of the 25th Battalion band at St. Thomas. This was in 1872. In 1880 he went to Chatham being appointed instructor of the 24th Battalion band there. He first took up his residence In Galt in 1884, when he assumed the mastership of the 29th Battalion band here. Since that time he had been connected with the Citizens' Band in the same capacity.

      He was a professor of music in the widest acceptance of the term, having a thorough knowledge of all instruments. The deceased was twice married. His first wife was a sister of William Horner, of London, Ont.; the second who survives him, was Miss Eward, sister-in-law of J. E. Jones, Kingston. He leaves one son by his first marriage and four sons and two daughters by the second. All reside in Galt with the exception of George, who is a reporter on the Brooklyn Times' staff.

      The funeral will take place at four o'clock to-morrow afternoon from his late residence, North Water street to Mount View cemetery.
