- Veteran Citizen Has Passed Away
Had Resided Here For 65 Years
Was a Worthy Citizen of the Community
The community has been deprived of another pioneer citizen who has been called from this life. Mrs. Margaret Heller, relict of the late J. H. Heller sr. answered the last beckoning at 5.10 o'clock this morning.
Up to eighteen weeks ago the veteran lady was in her usual good health and displayed that vigor and activity which was her characteristic. Bronchial pneumonia overcame her. She recovered from the affliction but did not regain her strength. The infirmity of advanced years of …?... more pronounced and her condition became weaker and weaker. While her recovery was not expected yet the end was rather sudden.
During the past seventeen weeks Mrs. Heller had resided with her son, Mr. Alfred Heller, 96 Alma street, where her death occurred.
The deceased lady, who was known by the name of Margaret Schwenn before her marriage, was born in Sinsheim Baden Germany, on October 18th, 1837 and was therefore nearly 82 years of age. When sixteen years of age she came to this country with her parents, settling in this town where she had reside ever since. Over sixty one years ago she was wedded to her late husband. Last year they celebrated the sixtieth anniversary of their marriage by a happy family reunion at the former home on East King street. Mr. Heller passed away on August 7th, 1918.
The passing away of Mrs. Heller recalls the growth of the town. But more than this it reminds one of those qualities and sacrifices of the pioneer people of the community who have left a valuable heritage to their children and to Canada. Their own years have been closed but their life has not. Their good influence is undying. Their memory will ever be green.
The deceased is survived by five sons and one daughter, namely, Alfred, Henry, Fred, Adolph all of this city, Albert of Frankfort, Ky., and Mrs. A. W. Lorch of Detroit. Three daughters predeceased her. Two sisters also survive, who are Mrs. Stephen Hauser, city and Mrs. Henry Alles, Hillsdale, Mich.
There are nineteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Heller was an asset to her church, namely, St. Peter's Lutheran, and also to the Ladies Aid Society of which she was a member and in her early years a useful worker in the same.
The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the residence of her son, 96 Alma Street to St. Peters' Church for service and thence to Mt. Hope Cemetery for interment. The services will be conducted by the Rev. M. Ardent city in the absence of the pastor of the church.
