    • CULLEN, JOHN

Found dead in the cellar way of his home on Portland St. in Galt on Monday, July 6, 1896. Out on the 4th concession of Puslinch, where he lived for many years, the feeling generally obtains that John Cullen, who was found dead in his house in Galt a few months ago, met his end by foul play. The impression has been gained by careful inquiries on the part of his old neighbours into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. The injuries discovered on the man could not all have been sustained by a fall down a few steps. He was perfectly able to take care of himself when last seen. There was no apparent reason for his going to the stairway, where he is supposed to have met his death. The key of the front door was found in his pocket, although he was never known to take it out of the lock, when he was at home. These are a few of the facts connected with his death that his old neighbours think do not fit in with the theory that it was an accident. He was last seen on Wednesday evening, July 1st 1896. He departed for home early and well able to take care of himself. On Monday evening, when the coroner arrived on the scene, he deemed an inquest unnecessary as apparently, everything pointed to an accidental death. His body was interred at Guelph on the following day.
