Notes |
- FLATT, GEORGE
Mr. Flatt, who resided on Kerr St. in Galt, met a sad death on Wednesday, March 15, 1909, when he expired at the hospital from a fractured skull, which he sustained a few minutes before, in a fall down a narrow stairway at the rear of the hardware store of Hammil and Moore on Main St. , Galt. Shortly before 4: 45, Mr. Flatt, a man of about 66 years of age, entered the store and walked to the back to exchange a few words with Nichol Burnett, one of the clerks. Mr. Burnett was painting a partition and after remarking that he was busy, resumed his work. Just where Mr. Flatt was standing, there is a stairway leading to the cellar. Although there is a protection at the head of the stairs, it does not extend across the full length of the opening in the floor. Mr. Burnett noticed that Mr. Flatt's feet were dangerously near the opening and commenced to warn him. But it came too late and Mr. Flatt fell headlong down the stairs, his head striking a jack that was standing at the bottom. Mr. Burnett called for Miss Wells, the bookkeeper, to summon a doctor and went to the aid of Mr. Flatt, laying at the bottom of the stairs in a pool of blood. On being carried to the store, it was seen that there was a big gash in his head. Dr. Thomson and Dr. Charlton were soon at the scene and ordered his immediate removal to the hospital. The ambulance was called but Mr. Flatt expired almost as soon as he reached the institution. Mr. Flatt was an old and respected citizen of Galt and much sympathy is expressed to his many friends and relatives for his untimely end. He was born in Sheffield. For some time, he lived at Killean but thirty years ago, took up residence in Galt. At the time of his death, he was residing with Alex S. Mann on Kerr St. It is some years since Mr. Flatt was engaged in active work but he was formerly employed at Goldie and McCulloch and Cowan and Co. He was married twice. He leaves his second wife, one son, Fleming of Buffalo and a daughter, Mrs. William Aberhart (?) of Brantford. The funeral took place on Mar. 17 at 2: 30 from the residence of Mr. Mann to Mount View Cemetery.
