Notes |
- FLATT, PETER CLARK
Eldest son of George Flatt of Chalmers St. in Galt, under very sad circumstances. He was one of the pitchers in the Alpha Baseball Club. The previous Saturday, in the game against Hespeler, he played second base and was knocked down by a Hespeler player running the bases. He continued the game. On Monday he was at work at the Messrs. Cowan and Co. Foundry, in which he was serving a five year apprenticeship at ? and fitting and was within two weeks of its completion. He went to work again on Tuesday and continued until ten o'clock when, not feeling well, he left for home. On Wednesday he complained of a numbness in his legs and as it was growing worse, he was taken to the hospital by his physician on Thursday morning. The torpor continued to grow worse and towards night his limbs were totally paralysed. The nurse gave him some food about five o'clock on Friday morning, September 20, 1895, and shortly afterwards, she found him dead. He was a popular and esteemed comrade and workman. He was regarded as a skilled player and was highly thought of, on account of his unassuming pleasant manner, which endeared him to all his comrades and members of the opposing clubs alike. The funeral of this young man took place on Sunday afternoon, September 22, 1895, to Killean Cemetery, where his mother was interred a short time ago. The floral emblems were beautiful and comprised a pillow from the members of Alpha Baseball Club with the word "Alpha" worked on it in purple flowers; "The Gates Ajar" from the fellow employees of Messrs. Cowan & Co. ; a wreath from the Berlin Baseball Club; and a baseball bat from the Hespeler team, besides many from individual friends. Rev. Jackson conducted the service. Pallbearers: were six members of the Alpha team: Herbert Hindmarsh, Harry Hunking, J. A. Hutcheson, J. D. Scott, James Spalding and Wes Pickering. The funeral was largely attended and the members of the Berlin, Waterloo, Preston, Hespeler and Galt clubs attended in a body.
