  Valentine Witzel, for 40 years a resident of Ionia, passed away at 3:30 Monday morning, at age of 78 years, at the home, 330 Welton street. While feeble for a couple of years, he was yet able to be about, and worked in the garden last Friday, when, it is surmised, he became overheated, his illness dating from that day. Mr. and Mrs. Witzel came to Ionia from Canada. They reared a large family, seven children and the wife surviving. The living children are: Henry and Godlup of this city, Peter of Sheridan, Albert of Montpelier, Ohio, Fred of Detroit, Mrs. Emma Lane of Grand Rapids, and Mrs. Barbara Musser of Canada. The life of deceased was one of continuous toil. He will be laid at rest on Wednesday afternoon, the funeral being attended from the late home at 2 o'clock. Ionia Weekly Standard, 16 Jul 1909
