Notes |
- It is with great sadness that the family and friends of Sandra Lass 56, of Moncton, announce her passing on Tuesday, April 14, 2009, at the Moncton City Hospital after her heroic struggle with cancer. She was the beloved wife of Mark Rickard, mother of Ben, step-mother of Sandra and Elizabeth, and god-mother of Margaret. Sandy was born in Punkeydoodles Corner, Ontario, the feisty first child of Hans and Joyce (Hewitt) Lass. Sandy grew up in a hard-working farming household that soon included sisters Patricia and Catherine, and brothers Max and Mark. Sandy will be greatly missed by her parents, and siblings, their spouses, Hans, Victoria, and Christine and their families, with whom she shared annual Christmas holidays and summer vacations. This strong family connection remained a priority in her life. Sandy graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours in 1976, and following her Education Degree from Queens University in 1977, she ventured East to teach. Ten years later, on a sabbatical from teaching, Sandy earned a Masters Degree in Guidance from the University of Western Ontario. During her 32 year career, Sandy taught at Moncton High School, Riverview High School, Evergreen Park School, and Bernice MacNaughton High School. Whether it was in the Music Department, Guidance Department, or as a classroom English teacher, Sandy left her own mark on each. She had a passionate love of learning and a natural curiosity that made her a respected teacher and a cherished colleague. Growing up in rural Ontario, Sandy had a wonderful appreciation of nature, especially flowers. She was an avid gardener, and was instrumental in creating the garden space at MacNaughton High School. She loved the outdoors, especially the beach and cottage life on the Johnston Point Road in Shemogue. It was here, also, at Camp Ta Wa Si that she volunteered so much of her time in her role as a member of the Board of Directors. Sandy had a lovely voice, and shared that gift with church choirs; she was a member of the Greater Moncton Choral Society, and most recently participated in the acclaimed production of Handels Messiah. As well, Sandy led school choirs, directed school bands, and for many years was a sought after singer at weddings and family celebrations. Perhaps Sandys greatest gift was her appreciation of every day life. She had a knack for seeing beauty in the ordinary. Her friendships were many and long-lasting. She leaves behind numerous friends, including the Birthday Girls, who cant imagine a gathering without her. Sandy lives on through the lives she has touched in her professional life, through her family and friends, but especially through her son, Ben, with whom she had so much in common, and of whom she was so proud. Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), Thursday, 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The service, in celebration of Sandys life, will be held at Central United Church, Queen St., Moncton on Friday, April 17, 2009 at 4:00 pm, Rev. M. Gayle MacDonald and Rev. Andrew Richardson officiating. Reception following the service. Donations in Sandys honour may be made to the Sandra Lass Memorial Garden at Bernice MacNaughton High School or the Canadian Cancer Society. Online condolences at www.fergusonknowlesfh.com Services
