We are called upon to-day to chronicle the death of one of Berlin's oldest and most highly esteemed citizens in the person of Mr. Carl Zarnke who passed to the Great Beyond on Wednesday. Deceased has reached the ripe old age of 86, having been born in Germany on Feb. 4th, 1823. He came to Berlin in 1854 and for a considerable time resided on Church street, but latterly has lived with his son Fred at 339 King street west.

Mr. Zarnke has always enjoyed excellent health and but for an accident which he met with thirty years ago, when he lost his leg at J. Y. Shantz's saw mill, he was never sick a day in his life, and at the time of the accident was on duty two weeks after the injury was received.

He was a charter member of St. Peter's Lutheran church and always took an active interest in church work.

Mrs. Zarnke predeceased him about two years ago, but he is survived by one son and one daughter, Fred living at 339 King street, west and Mrs. Anna Hay, Toronto.
