- LIFETIMES: Physiotherapist and world traveller opened her heart to everyone
Anna Maria Oeser of Kitchener, born: Aug. 14, 1925, in Germany, died: Sept. 22, 2017, of age-related illness
Anna Maria Oeser's Kitchener home is filled with souvenirs of her travels, not to mention an address book thick with names of people from around the world.
Each name, each carving and piece of jewelry represented a deeply personal connection Anna Maria made wherever she travelled.
Anna Maria was not just a tourist, she wanted to understand the culture and make friends with everyone, from the Yukon to Mexico, from Europe to Indonesia and Egypt.
Her three children talk about a trip with a church group and while her travel companions stuck together, Anna Maria broke away so she could engage with the locals....
Anna Maria was born in Germany, one of two kids. Her father was an interior designer but during the Second World War, the family was torn apart. Her father served in the military and her brother was conscripted as a teenager. Anna Maria was also conscripted to serve in the girls wing of Hitler Youth, an arm of the Nazi party.....
In October 1953, Anna Maria emigrated and luckily had an aunt and uncle living in a small, wartime house in Kitchener. The couple were happy to take her in and she lived in rather close quarters with their five children and boarders. New to Kitchener and being single, Anna Maria usually had a boarder provide an escort when she left the house.....
