- Scout chief honored
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Frederick B. (Ted) Hathaway, executive director of the B.C.-Yukon Council of Boy Scouts of Canada, who died Saturday at age 64.
Representatives of scout groups from throughout the region attended the service, conducted by Rev. Terry Finch and Rev. Peter Collins at West Point Grey United Church, followed by interment in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Born in Kitchener, Ontario, Mr. Hathaway served in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps during the Second World War, retiring with the rank of major.
Immediately after leaving military service, he joined the executive staff of Boy Scouts of Canada at its national headquarters in Ottawa.
Shortly afterwards he was ap pointed executive director of the organization's Greater Vancouver Regional Council. He remained in that position until March, 1968, when he was appointed executive director of the B.C.-Yukon Council.
He served in a staff capacity at nine provincial, national and world jamborees and was scheduled to serve at the 15th World Jamboree to be held in in July, 1983, in Banff, Alta., where 15,000 boys will be gathered from 117 countries.
Among the many awards he received was the Scouting Medal of Merit in 1946, and the National Centennial Medal in 1967.
Mr. Hathaway was a member of the Vancouver Foundation's youth advisory committee, the Institute of Association of Executives, the Van- couver Board of Trade, the United Services Institute and the Canadian Power Squadron.
He is survived by his wife, Nellie, daughter Mrs. Anne Keir and three grandchildren. Mr. Hathaway was predeceased by two sons, Peter and David.
