  • Notes
    • The Later Mr. John Johnstone - Another, and perhaps the last but one of the original settlers of Cedar Creek has passed away. A sot of men, to whose willing hands, frugal habits, indomitable perseverance, and noble example, the township of Dumfries owes so much. Deceased was born in Dumfriesshires, and from manhood until his marriage lived in Moffat Water as shepherd under the Johnstone's, then, and their descendants still, among the largest sheep farmers in the south of Scotland. For a number of years prior to his leaving Scotland, he was employed as shepherd and manager, both of proprietors and south country farmers, who occupied large tracts of land in the Highlands, his extraordinary knowledge of all kinds of stock eminently qualifying him to discharge this duty with great satisfaction to his employers. He came to this country in the year 1836 and settled on the farm adjoining his father-in-law, the late James Heastie, also from Moffat Water. Deceased was the father of a numerous family, five sons and five daughters, nine of whom survive him, who together with a great number of grand-children, and not a few great-grandchildren, mourn the loss of a kind friend and indulgent father. The deceased gentleman held several offices municipally in the township of Dumfries, having been Assessor and Collector for several years. He always took a warm interest in municipal affairs, and warmly supported our agricultural and other institutions, holding at different times in them prominent positions.
