- Sad Death by Drowning - A sad accident occurred in the village of Plattsville on Saturday the 11th inst., about four o'clock in the afternoon, where by the Rev. C. Lazenby met an untimely end by drowning. Deceased in company with a lad named Leader, aged 14 years, and another aged 17 years, went to the river to bathe - the two former, who could swim, went in, the other who could not swim remaining on the bank. After being in the water a few minutes, deceased was heard to make a noise, and on Leader looking he observed his head leaning forward in the water, but still trying to swim. The boy at once caught him, but found he was too heavy for him. At this juncture the boy on shore threw in a plank which Leader got on, still holding deceased; but after several vain attempts to get him on the plank he slipped from his grasp and sank. The boys now gave the alarm and a crowd soon collected, and several parties at once commenced to dive for the body which was eventually found in about ten feet of water, and brought to the surface by a young man named Job. He had now been in the water over an hour and the doctor pronounced life extinct. Deceased was son-in-law of the Rev. T. Adams, of this town, and was named to his now bereaved and grief-stricken partner on the 26th June last. That he was held in high esteem was evinced by the large turnout of all classes this funeral which took place on Sunday afternoon, at four o'clock.
