Notes |
- Mildred Edith Geil Caldwell died on December 27, 2017, after a long, fruitful life dedicated to her family, her friends, and to helping others. She was born on September 18, 1925, in a farmhouse near Alsfeldt, Ontario, Canada, to Edward G. Geil and Mary Rosetta Durst Geil. After growing up on the farm, Millie Geil obtained a teaching degree from Stratford Normal School in 1943 and then taught in Canadian schools for five years. While teaching in Guelph, Ontario, she met her future husband, Dr. A. George Caldwell, at a dance. George was studying at Ontario Agricultural College (OAC). They married in 1948. His career took them, and their growing family, to Ames, Iowa (Iowa State), back to OAC, then to Texas A&M and finally Louisiana State University. Wherever she was planted, Millie knew how to bloom. On annual trips to Canada, she and George kept up ties with family and friends, including fondly-remembered days spent boating with sister Doris and brother-in-law Frank Zurbrigg. Millie's deep faith led her to abhor injustice and poverty, while fostering her joy in living and her remarkable ability to connect with people of all ages and walks of life. Her family and many friends were deeply devoted to her. Millie had a deep connection to nature and found great pleasure in gardening, flower-arranging, and bird-watching. Another passion was music - playing piano by ear, singing with her church choir during her younger years, sometimes as a soloist, and with her children. How she loved bridge and excelled at it! She had a lifelong love of learning, expressed in many ways, including finishing her bachelor degree in 1976 at LSU, being named to the Alpha Sigma Lambda honorary society. Mrs. Caldwell was active in many organizations, including Chapter C of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, serving as president and other offices, LSU Campus Club, LSU Camping and Travel Club, 39'ers Book Club, and Tiger Twirlers dance club. During her daughters' youth, she served as a Girl Scout leader. Always active in the church, Millie was chosen as a delegate from Ontario to the World Conference of Christian Youth in Oslo, Norway, in 1947. While in College Station, Texas, she served as president of the Christian Women's Fellowship at A&M Christian Church. Her long, active membership in University United Methodist Church included serving on the board, as an assistant to the pastor, and as a United Methodist Women's leader. She also served on the Care Team, Prayer Team, and Flower Power Guild, and was the recipient of a special mission recognition award. As part of the Kids Hope USA program, she served as a reading mentor, teacher-encourager, and prayer partner at University Terrace School. Having survived cancer, Mrs. Caldwell served as a volunteer at Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center for 25 years, receiving the 2006 Anna B. Lipsey Volunteer of the Year award. Mildred was predeceased by one child who died in infancy and also by her husband, George Caldwell. She is survived by sister Shirley Geil Howes; and by her four children and their spouses: Catherine Caldwell and her husband William Stehlin (Charlottesville, VA), Martha Caldwell Diehl and her husband Charles Diehl (Durango, CO), Steven Caldwell and his wife Katherine Pruyn Caldwell (Baton Rouge, LA), and Charles Caldwell and his wife Karen Skeens Caldwell (Houston, TX); as well as her eight beloved grandchildren: John Stehlin and his wife Logan Harris, Kate Stehlin, Rosemary Diehl Beall and her husband Kyle Beall, David Diehl and his wife Brittany Schleizer Diehl, Bennett and Preston Caldwell, Sophie and Christopher Caldwell; and three great-grandchildren: Nathan, Asher, and Abigail Beall. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will cherish forever memories of their loving "Mimi." Mildred had special relationships throughout her life, including her "honorary grandson" Richard Selim; and three "honorary" daughters, Norma and Rosa Velasco and Rosy Alanis, who each spent a semester with the Caldwell family in their teen years, due to a close friendship with Dr. and Mrs. Hugo Velasco of Monterrey, Mexico. Late in life, Millie was blessed by kind-hearted caregivers, especially Brenda Todd and Betty Duncan, for whom the family is deeply grateful, as was Millie herself. The family also wishes to recognize with gratitude the staff members of Canon Hospice and Caring Companions of St. James Place. A hand-lettered sign above Millie's desk read: "Do all the good you can, for all the people you can, in all the ways you can, as long as ever you can." And she walked that talk every step of her journey. For her loving, caring ways and ready laugh, she will be fondly remembered. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at University United Methodist Church, with a reception and visitation to follow. For those wishing to make a contribution in memory of Millie, the family suggests the Kids Hope USA program at UUMC, and the A. George & Mildred G. Caldwell Endowed Professorship in Agronomy and Soils at LSU.
