- McBrine's Treasurer Dies at 58 - John A. Merklinger, 58, treasurer of the L. McBrine Company Limited, was stricken by a heart attack while curling at the Granite Curling Club Saturday night and died shortly afterwards at K-W Hospital. Mr. Merklinger, who lived at 110 Gatewood Rd., had been with the McBrine firm for 38 years, joining the company after attending Stratford Business College. He was an active Lutheran and was president of St. Paul's Lutheran church, treasurer of the Ontario district, Lutheran church - Missouri Synod and a member of its department of missions and church extension. He became treasurer of the Ontario district just two months ago. In addition, he was a member of the K-W Kiwanis Club, a director of the Granite Curling Club and a member of the Kitchener Lawn Bowling Club. Born April 7, 1905, in Pigeon, Mich., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Merklinger, he came to Canada in 1914 and to Kitchener in 1924. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Allemang; a son, Kenneth, Ottawa; four brothers, Edward of Leaside, Peter of Kitchener, Arthur of Oakville, and Louis of Windsor, and a sister, Mrs. Howard (Gertrude) Schedewitz of Kitchener. The body will be at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until 1 pm tomorrow then at St. Paul's Church where Rev. Arthur Eissfeldt will conduct the funeral at 2: 30 pm. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery.
