- BUDDELL, Ronald - As the result of a plane accident, on Saturday, July 8, 1972, at Waterloo-Wellington Airport, Ronald Buddell, age 46 years, of 277 Shakespeare Dr., Waterloo, chartered accountant and trustee in bankruptcy for 20 years; alderman for the city of Waterloo and president of the Waterloo Lions Club; son of Mrs. Flora Buddell of Waterloo and the late Percy Buddell; husband of Verna Brighton and father of William, Peter and Patricia, all at home; predeceased by one daughter, Julie Lynn, and one brother, William Thomas. Resting at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., Waterloo, after 7 pm today until noon Wednesday, then to Parkminster United Church, Waterloo, for services at 2 pm, Rev. Walter Murray officiating. Interment Parkview Cemetery.

2 K-W businessmen die in crash at W-W Airport

The crash of a twin-engine Cessna 310 aircraft Saturday afternoon at Waterloo-Wellington airport look the lives of two members of the airport commission.
Dead are Waterloo Ald. Ronald Buddell, 45, of 277 Shakespeare Drive, chairman of the' 16-member commission, and Howard Allan Evans, 42, of 211 Halliwell Drive.
Mr. Buddell was piloting the plane.
As he got up to 350 or 400 feet, it appears an engine failed and he banked left," said Sgt. Donald Herman of Waterloo township police.
"Mr. Buddell asked the tower' for permission to land, and that is the last they heard."
The officer said the plane had taken off from Runway 25 about 2: 12 p.m. Witnesses said a muffled banging sound could be heard from the direction of the aircraft.
The plane banked steeply to the left with one engine apparently not functioning and crashed into a field about 300 feel from the side of the runway it had Just left.
An investigation is being conducted by Steven Musson, Toronto, of the department of transport, assisted by Waterloo township police under Sgt Herman. No decision has been made on an inquest.
Both victims were thrown from the plane when it nose-dived iota the field. They were killed instantly.
A watch found in the wreck was stopped at 2: 14 p.m.
Although it struck the ground nose first, the plane slid along the ground after impact, spreadling wreckage for several hundred feet.
The Cessna, owned Jointly by Buddell and Douglas Mitten of Hespeler, was valued at $30,000.
Mr. Evans was sales manager with Harold Freure Ltd. and it is believed the two men were heading for the Chicopee area to !inspect the new Chicopee Vale subdivision.
The investigators said they will have nothing to report on the probable cause of the take off failure until the investigation is complete and a report is released by the department of transport.
Evidence has been taken from six eyewitnesses.
The plane had returned to the airport July 3 after a flight by Mr. Buddell, his wife, and two Waterloo friends to Mexico City.
"We left on June 24," said Norman Raitar, 74 Ellis Cres.; Waterloo, who accompanied the Buddells on the trip along with Leonard Snider, 353 Dale Cres.
"It was the first trip I had made with Mr. Buddell and I was impressed by the carefullness and skill he showed in flying the plane. I even congratulated him," said Mr, Raitar.
TRIP WENT WELL
"Everything went perfectly on the trip, although going and returning we must have landed and taken off again about eight or nine times. I don't know what could have happened Saturday. We had no problems on the Mexico trip."
"I never travelled with a pilot who was more careful in my life,'' said Mr. Snider, who agreed completely with Mr. Raitar's comments.
Born in Waterloo May 30, 1926, Mr. Buddell was the son of Mrs. Flora Buddell and the late Percy Buddell.
A chartered accountant for 20 years and trustee in bankruptcy, he was first elected to Waterloo council in 1954.
During the Second World War he served with the Royal Canadian Navy for two years on North Atlantic patrol.
Mr. Buddell was recently elected president of Waterloo Lions Club, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, K-W Naval Veterans Association and the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association.
LED HOCKEY CLUB
He was also a member of the K-W Press Club, YMCA and a former director of the Waterloo Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Buddell was a past president of the Waterloo Siskins Hockey Club.
Surviving besides his mother are his wife, the former Verna Brighton, two sons, William and Peter, and one daughter, Patricia, all at home.
A daughter, Julie Lynn, and a brother, William, predeceased him, the latter being killed while serving with Canadian forces in the Second World War.
The body will be at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home after 7 pm. today. Funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Parkminster United Church, Waterloo, with Rev. Walter
