      THE LAST ROLL CALL

Death of Israel D. Bowman, County Clerk, and A. LaCourse, Senior Judge of the County. Benjamin Unger, an Old and Well Known Resident of the County Also Answers to the Summons of the Grim Reaper.

The past week has been eventful in the number of deaths of prominent persons in the County, including the County Clerk and Senior Judge.

      BENJAMIN UNGER.

Mr. Benjamin Unger, one of the oldest native-born residents of the County passed quietly away on Sunday, August 30th, at Galt. Deceased had been ill for some time past and of late his demise had been hourly expected. He was a man who has had a varied experience during his career. Born on a farm near Roseville, he received a good education, and when about twenty years of age he came to Galt and started out in life with Messrs. Forbes in the dry goods business. He afterwards bought out an interest in the Golden Lion dry goods store and then went to Guelph and engaged in the grocery and dry goods business. He also went into the auctioneering business. After giving this up he journeyed to California, where he operated a flour mill, and from thence he went to Australia. Upon his return to Canada he engaged in business in many towns, among them being Berlin, Paris, Coburg, Listowel, St. Thomas, Pt. Elgin, Alviston and Doon. In Berlin he remained nine years in the brokerage and private banking business. Some few years ago he returned to Galt and engaged in the real estate business until during the last winter, when he was appointed to the staff of excise officers by the Dominion government. Since that time he has been gradually failing until Sunday, when the angel of death called him to his eternal home. At one time a wealthy man, he died comparatively poor. He was twice married, his second wife, a daughter of Mr. Gustave Ante, surviving him. He leaves four children, all by his second wife, two boys and two girls, Adam, Reginald, Gwendoline and Camilla. He also leaves two brothers and three sisters, John, in Berlin, Moses Clemens, Michigan. Deceased was an honorable, trustworthy man, respected by all who knew him. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon to the R.C. cemetery. Galt Reporter.
