- Henry Hagen, Former Shirt Maker, Passes
Henry A. Hagen, 93, of 272 Queen St. South, died yesterday in London, Ont., after and illness of 3 months.
Prominent in the shirt industry, Mr. Hagen founded the former Hagen Shirt and Collar Company, later absorbed by John Forsyth Ltd.
Mr. Hagen started in business in 1886 with the former Kitchener shirt company of Williams, Greene and Rome.
INVENTED NECK BAND
He invented the cushion neck band, which prevented the stud from pressing into the neck of the wearer. He also initiated development of the present-day used collar.
Known as the "daddy of the shirt business," Mr. Hagen organized the Berlin Shirt and Collar Company in 1894 and formed his own company six years later. In 1907 he joined the Forsyth firm and served as superintendent until his retirement in 1940. For the next nine years he acted in an advisory capacity on quality control.
Mr. Hagen was born Aug. 24, 1867, in Germany but came to Canada when he was three. His parents were the late John Hagen and Louise Arndt.
MARRIED IN 1889
On Aug. 7, 1889, he married Florence Bolduc, She predeceased him on Oct. 4, 1957.
Mr. Hagen was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Surviving are a son, Lorne of Lakewood, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs Naomi Miller of Detroit; four grandchildren and 10 great-grand children. Three brothers predeceased him.
The body will be at the Schreiter Sandrock Funeral Home until Wednesday at 12:30 pm, the at St. Matthew's Church where the funeral service will be conducted in the chapel at 2 p.m Rev. Dr. John Schmieder will officiate and burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery. Donation to St. Matthew's Church mission will be accepted as tokens sympathy.
