  	In 1837 at the time of the war they resolved to move to Oxford county and took passage on the unfortunate vessel "Sir Robert Peel." All went well up the St. Lawrence river, until they arrived at Walesse's Island, where the vessel was attacked by the enemies, the passengers driven ashore at the point of the bayonet, the vessel ransacked and robbed of its valuables and set on fire. Here they lost everything, bag and baggage, as they used to say, save the lives of themselves and their five little children, three of which had to be carried of the boat to escape from the roaring flames off the burning vessel. Deceased used to say that she stood on shore when the vessel was burned to the water's level and saw the smoke stack tumble into the water.

  Mary Hogg Relict of the late Robert Vance, whose death we announced last week was born on Feb. 26th A. D. 1804, in the parish of Glenluec, county of Wighton, Galloway Shire, Scotland, died, Aug. 16th, 1892. Her remains taken to Ratho cemetery for interment in the presence of many friends and acquaintances, from far and near to pay the last tribute of respect to the deceased. The funeral sermon was preached by the Rev. Mr. Bielby of New Hamburg. Deceased was the widow of the late Robert Vance, who was born on Nov. 12th A. D. 1804, on the farm of Beltroston parish, Gallway Shire, Scottland. They were married on Nov. 9th, 1827. In the year 1831 they immigrated to Canada, landed in Quebec, in the month of May after six weeks sailing and settled in Williamsburg, Upper Canada and lived there for six years. In 1837 at the time of the war they resolved to move to Oxford county and took passage on the unfortunate vessel "Sir Robert Peel." Deceased used to say that she stood on shore when the vessel was burned to the water's level and saw the smoke stack tumble into the water. The passengers were then taken up by another vessel and taken to Prescott and after a short stay to Hamilton, they settled in the township of Blenheim, living there for fifteen years, two years in Wilmot, and now for 38 years on lot 35, 18th concession, East Zorra, where they changed a rough bush lot into a good farm and a pleasant home. Their married life which was blessed with 8 children (7 sons and one daughter) lasted 64 years, 5 months and 25 days and she lived as a widow about 15 months on the old homestead with her son Thomas, where the commandment "Honor thy father and mother" was well observed and carried out. The deceased were highly respected by the whole county for their politeness and honesty. They took an active part in religious matters and were members of the Presbyterian church. Four sons and the daughter survive them to mourn their departure, namely: Joseph and Thomas Vance of East Zorra, farmers and well known horsemen; Robert Vance of Norwich, horseman and James Vance of Yreka, California, miller and wholesale merchant; Agnes, widow of the late Robert Barber of Wilmot.
