- POLLOCK, Rita
With her children at her side, passed away peacefully at the Fairview Mennonite Home Long Term Care Facility, on May 5, 2014. Predeceased by her husband James, mother Hedwig, father, Wilhelm, brother Reinhold and sisters Irmgard and Marie, Rita leaves behind her beloved children Michael Pollock (Kim), Shannon Pollock and Aileen Kersting (Sven). She will be sorrowfully missed by her grandchildren: Camac, Kaitlyn, Jack, Bram, Erik, Haleigh, and Dakota. Born on March 5, 1938 in Ronkhausen, Germany, Rita was the 3rd of 7 children of Hedwig and Wilhelm Baussmann. Following in the footsteps of her brother Johanas, Rita immigrated to Canada in 1962. While working as a hair stylist at 'The Continental' salon, she met and married James Pollock. Together they built a successful business on King St. in Preston and raised a loving family on Shettleston Drive. James passed away suddenly in 1985, leaving Rita to finish the raising of their children and help her son Michael with the continuation of the family business. After her daughter Shannon was born deaf, Rita became involved with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Society, where she eventually held the position of Vice President. Also socially active, Rita (Big Red), with her good natured outspoken personality was blessed with the gift of many enduring friendships. These friends not only helped her through the difficult years after James passed, but were there for her when her health began to fail in 2010. The family would like to express their thanks to all of the wonderful care providers at the Fairview Mennonite Home, Hespeler wing who worked tirelessly to make Rita's final home a comfortable and caring one. Burial has taken place. Relatives and Friends are invited to a Celebration of Life Gathering at The Pines, 115 Fountain Street, Cambridge on Friday, May 9, 2014, from 4 - 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the Fairview Mennonite Home or the Deaf Culture Center for the 'Adopt-A-Sign Campaign". This program will help to expand the new animated ASL dictionary for deaf children. Your donation will allow the dictionary to grow and become a valuable on-line resource for Deaf children and their families. Arrangements entrusted to the Barthel Funeral Home, (519) 653-3251.
