    • MYCKAN, Anne "Annie" (nee Klapkew)

January 25, 1921 - September 6, 2018. Passed away peacefully, while surrounded by family on Thursday, September 6, 2018, in her 98th year. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, Dmytro, who just passed a short 7 months ago. Also predeceased by her siblings; Frank and Stan Klapkew and Mary Shantz. Loving mother of John Myckan (Patricia Sommers) and Joanne Zylstra (Tom) and proud grandmother of Andrew and Allison (Mike Dehaan). Born in Preston, Ontario. At just 1 year old, after the loss of her own mother, Mom and her siblings were sent to the orphanage at St. Agatha, to be cared for by the nuns. Her dad worked full-time (and in those days they were very long hours) so he was unable to sufficiently care for them. He would visit every weekend, bearing gifts of candy and fruit and whatever else he could afford. After graduating grade 8 at St. Agatha, Mom whet back home to be with her father and help out around the house. It seems Mom was missing the nuns that raised her and after a few years at home, she decided to join the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Waterdown. After 2 years as a Novice, mom took her first vows and after 3 more years took her final vows. Mom remained in Waterdown and worked at the Mother House with the nuns until 1955. Again, she felt another calling; she wanted to get married and have a family. This was not an easy request to make to the Mother Superior at that time and required approval from her and the Pope in Rome. Over time the Mother Superior saw how mom needed to pursue this new direction and with her blessing and the approval of Pope Pius XII; Mom was granted her leave from the order. Mom went back home to live with her family. At the time her father was working at Butler Metals in Preston. Our father, Dmytro, was also working there; he was relatively new to this country, a hard worker, looking for a wife and wanting to build a house and start a family. They were introduced and only courted for a short time before our father proposed marriage. Mom was unsure because it was a great big new world to her, having lived in the convent for so long, with no experience in the outside world! She consulted with her parish priest at St Clements Church, in Preston. He asked her one question, "Do you love him?" Well the rest is history and I guess you could say, it was a match made in heaven. They spent 61 wonderful years together on this earth and now are finally back together again for eternity. The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at Golden Years Nursing Home for their compassionate care. Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation at the BARTHEL FUNERAL HOME, 566 Queenston Road, Cambridge, on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. and for the Funeral Liturgy Service at 12 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at Parklawn Cemetery.
