Notes |
- William Spiers, who managed a shop in Berlin for nearly fifty years, died Friday afternoon in the hospital here after several weeks of suffering. The deceased was born in 1827 in Ayrshire, Scotland. After coming to Canada, he took over the management of the store constructed in 1854 at the corner of King and Foundry Streets for the firm of Osborne and Spiers. The latter was his brother, who still resides in Galt. Later, the business came under his personal ownership and was operated by him without interruption until his death. The store is far and away the oldest in Berlin. Old Mr. Spiers had not made one single enemy in his whole, lengthy business-life, which was a sign he was always honest and upright. The deceased had never married. He is survived by his brother in Galt and a sister in Scotland. The burial took place on Monday in Galt. Translated by: Patricia J. Kauk

King Street
Foundry [Ontario Street] to Queen Street- Almost the whole of this block was a spongy swamp, with willow trees along the edge. Cattle could scarcely go into it as they would sink. Up to 1850 there was no building up to Gaukel's Hotel at the corner of Queen Street. Along the street front there was an elevated sidewalk erected on cedar posts with stringers. The sidewalk was about six feet wide and high enough to enable boys to explore underneath as, of course, they used to do. About 1858, Osborne Spiers & Co., erected a three-storey brick building, later known as Spiers' Block, on the Foundry Street corner. The building contained two stores fronting on King Street, one occupied by Wm. Spiers as a grocery and wine and spirit merchant, and the other a dry goods store first occupied by Mr. Stanton and later by W. H. G. Knowles who had been clerk at Stanton's.
