BAMBERG, A small airplane struck a tree-top moments before it plunged to the ground Saturday, killing a former president of the Waterloo-Guelph Flying Club. A witness, Fred Heer of Kitchener, said the twin-engine Piper Seminole piloted by Apex Metals president Stuart Gilbert McLean, 54, of 81 Church St. Kitchener, was flying extremely low and banking over a small woodlot, when a wing tip hit a tree. McLean was the plane's sole occupant. The crash occurred about 1 p.m., just north of Bamberg, 15 kilometres west of Waterloo: Heer, who was driving a cement truck north on Regional Road 10, watched in horror as the plane slammed into the ground, then skidded across the road and crashed into a row of trees, only a few hundred metres away from his truck. Another witness said later the accident occurred after the pilot flew low to "buzz" some friends in the area. Police said a post-mortem was conducted to determine whether McLean suffered a heart attack, before the crash. The results will not be available for several days. McLean, a well-known businessman who was recently awarded a gold medal for his contribution to aviation in Canada, was dead at the scene, coroner Dr. Jack Burger said. An industrial engineer, McLean was a co-owner of Apex Metals Ltd., an auto-parts firm, an owner of the automotive sales company, M.L.W. Associates of Detroit and vice-chairman of the Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association of Canada.
