    • Rev. John Henry

(Aug. 15, 1922 - May 19, 2007). Passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 19, 2007, at Lisaard House, Cambridge. He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Bechtel and his four children, Mary Lou Hess, John and his wife Dairine Ni Mheadhra, Doreen Hess, Rhonda Willows and her husband Ian and their three children, Jeffrey, Nicole and Erika. Also survived by his brother, David and his wife Ruth and his sister, Rhoda Lind and her husband Wilbur. He was the fourth and youngest child, born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on August 15, 1922 to David Martin Hess and Lydia Ann Buckwalter. He graduated from Goshen College, in 1948, with a Bachelor of Theology Degree. During his studies at Goshen College, he met Ruth Bechtel and they were married on August 21, 1948. John served on the pastoral team at First Mennonite Church, in Kitchener, from 1949-1955. Following this the family moved to Scarborough, where he served as pastor of Warden Park Mennonite Church. In 1968, the congregation moved to a new building in Warden Woods Scarborough, to face the challenge of ministering to a new community. His tireless advocacy on behalf of this community and his vision for integrated social and spiritual services, led to Scarborough granting him their "Man of the Year" award in 1970. After thirty-one years in Scarborough, John and Ruth moved to Kingston, Ont., where he became Chaplain, at the Prison for Women. In 1977, he and his wife moved to Cambridge, Ontario, where he began an active retirement, gardening, woodworking and participating in the nursery at Wanner Mennonite Church. John approached death as he did life, with gentle dignity and inspiring faith. At the request of John, cremation has taken place. A memorial visitation will take place at Fairview Mennonite Auditorium on Saturday, May 26, 2007, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held at Fairview Mennonite Auditorium on Sunday, May 27, 2007, at 2 p.m.
