    • Deceased of One of Waterloo's Truest Sons

On Sunday morning last, at the age of seventy-seven years, there passed to his eternal rest, Mr. William Patterson, of Waterloo Township. For some time this aged and respected person had been ailing with what proved to be a fatal affection. Dr. Ochs, of Hespeler, did all in his power to relieve the sufferer, but still, did not expect him to depart this life so suddenly. Last Saturday night, Mr. Patterson retired as usual, and slept well until about six o'clock on Sunday morning, when he was seized with a violent fit of coughing, which resulted in such a flux of blood as to immediately check breathing. In a few minutes all was over, and he, who was the light of that home, was still in death. Mr. Patterson was a native of Ireland, and in early life settled in this country, while the forests were in their pristine wildness and immensity. A number of years ago he moved farther west, and settled on the farm which has since then been the family home. By industry and application equaled by few he and his faithful wife and children made for themselves a very comfortable home indeed. While arduously laboring physically, Mr. P. did not allow his mental faculties to go untutored, but the rather, spent some time storing his mind with useful knowledge. He was not an omnivorous reader, but what he read was well weighed and carefully treasured in the store-room of a most retentive memory.

Every person who conversed with him was forcibly struck by his sound principles of reasoning and his singular intelligence. In politics he held views, that were based on honest and truly British principles, but void of that dogmatism and that fire-brand composition which are characteristic of so many in this age of Party Government.

In things pertaining to his future existence, he was very conversant, and all through his life he was an example of one who made his dealings with his fellow-men be inconsistence with his honest religious opinions. He was a member of the Methodist church, and was a factor for good with all whom he came in contact. Everything of a trifling or frivolous nature in regard to things divine received his just discountenance.

His wife and five out of seven children, survive a noble husband and an estimable parent, William, his only surviving son, remains on the old homestead with his aged mother. On Tuesday afternoon, a large gathering of friends followed the remains to Wanner's Cemetery, where so many of Waterloo's noblest sleep. Rev. Dr. Cornish, of Hespeler, conducted the funeral services very acceptably. Thus these old landmarks are being rapidly removed, and very few of those who experienced pioneer life, now remain.
