McLoughry was `outstanding' leader
Elliott I. (Mac) McLoughry, who was an agricultural representative, for Waterloo County for 27 years, died Sunday, at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in his 93rd year. "He was just a tremendous man," recalls Bruce Witmer, who has a farmer at RR 21, Cambridge. "An outstanding leader (in agriculture)." Mr. Witmer, 57, first met Mr. McLoughry when he was 13 and belonged to a club, which preceded what's known today as the 4-H Club. Through the years, Mr. Witmer continued to benefit as a farmer from Mr. McLoughry's advice. Farmers who knew him thought so highly of him that when he left as agricultural representative in the 1950's, they gave him a car, said Mr. Witmer. "The cars he had (before then) were always a government car," Mr. Witmer recalled. Mr. Witmer also remembered Mr. McLoughrey's stamina when many men were away during the Second World War, including some from his office. "He did a fabulous job," keeping the 4-H club going and keeping a variety of crops in the county, said Mr. Witmer. "I respected him," said Mr. Witmer. "I had a lot of admiration." Mr. McLoughry's other accomplishments included establishing the first artificial insemination program for cattle in Canada in the 1940's. After being the county's agricultural representative for 27 years, he became director of the extension department with the province's Department of Agriculture, but "never lost interest in Waterloo County," Mr. Witmer said. Mr. Witmer also recalled that Mr. McLoughry nominated as a judge for the International Livestock Judging Competition in England and Scotland in 1951. In those days, the trip over was made by boat, recalled Mr. Witmer. "I was on the boat for a week!" Mr. Witmer thinks Mr. McLoughry's influence on him was lasting as he continued his 4-H involvement and is currently a leader with the Galt Kiwanas 4-H. Mr. McLoughry a graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College, was also honored by the college for his contribution to agriculture when given the centennial medal in 1974. After graduating from college, he was also an assistant agricultural representative in Victoria and Dundas Counties, before coming to Waterloo County and becoming its third agricultural representative. Other accomplishments, included setting up the first swine-testing station in New Hamburg in the 1930's. In the 1920's, he also started a course for farmers at the Ontario Agricultural College and assisted with some research at the school. Mr. McLoughry is survived by his daughter, Annis Reid of Tara and his sister Annie of Markdale. His wife died in 1976. The funeral was held this afternoon, at Trinity Anglican Church.
