    • O'CONNOR, MAURICE MCNAMARA.

      According to information from his great grandson, he was born in Waterford, Ireland, on August 4, 1826. He attended Dublin University, and emmigrated to Canada in, or possibly before. He acted as ship's surgeon on the ship which brought him here. A great grand daughter was not able to find a record of him at the major Irish universities, but an appiontment as ship's surgeon would at that time qualify him to practice.

      In 1851 his name appeared in the Haysville census, at which time he was single, and 24 years of age. In 1864 he obtained his medical degree from Victoria University, and was registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons in that year.

      His only newsworthy event was on June 15. 1870, when under the influence of alcohol he aimed a double barrelled shotgun at a Mr. Hays. As the newspaper said he "fired both barrels, one at random and the other at Hays." He had intended to frighten Hays, and although judged free of criminal intent, was sentenced to six weeks in jail for wounding.

      He died at Haysville on August 31. 1874, aged 47 years, and left his widow, the youngest daughter of Daniel Tye, of Haysville, and ten children.

      The Galt Reporter said of him,

      The deceased. gentleman was widely known through the County, and although he had his faults like the rest of us, was very much respected. In the medical profession he bore a very high reputation.

      O'Connor, Maurice, M. D. - Came to Canada from Ireland in 1851 and took a degree of M. D. in Toronto School of Medicine some years later. In 1852 he married Minnie, daughter of the late Daniel Tye. He had a large family, among whom were Mrs. Dealtry Woodcock, Daniel O'Connor, traveller, Frank, deceased. He died in 1874 at the age of 48 years and is buried at St. James'.
