- SCHAEFER, Donald C. After a brief illness. Don died, at St. Mary's General Hospital, on Saturday, February 15, 2003, age 78 years.
Beloved husband of Ruth (Goudie); dear father of Jim Schaefer and his wife Carolyn of Guelph and Doug Schaefer and his wife Mary Ruth McDonald of Orangeville. He will be lovingly remembered by his grand children, Becky, Kathye, Christa, Paul. Alec and Cameron. Brother of Ken Schaefer and his wife Fawn of Waterloo.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edith (Mattusch) and William A. Schaefer.
Don completed 37 years of service with the City of Waterloo before retiring on December 31, 1984. He held the position of City Treasurer and Commissioner of Finance for approximately 30 years. He was on the Board of Directors of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO), the Clerks and Treasurers Association of Ontario and the Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS). In 1999, Don was the first recipient of the AMO Municipal Recognition Award presented in appreciation of exemplary service to Ontario's municipal governments and to AMO. He served 3 years in the Canadian Army Personnel Selection Division (Staff Sergeant) and was a former member of the Waterloo Rotary Club. Waterloo Lions Club and the Institute of Municipal Assessors. For over 8 years, he served on the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital Commission; four years as Treasurer and Chairman of the Finance Committee and also as Chairman of the Human Resources Committee. Currently, he was a member of the Waterloo-Laurel Kiwanis Club, Retired Business and Professional Mens Association. Ontario Municipal Retirees Organization and St. John's Lutheran Church.
Don's family will receive friends at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., in Waterloo from 7-9 p.m. today (Tuesday), and from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the chapel of the funeral home on Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Donald Kranz officiating, Following cremation, interment to follow in Parkview Cemetery, Waterloo, Following the service, friends and relatives are invited to the Reception Room of the funeral home for refreshments and a time to visit with the family.
