Notes |
- John August Walter was born in Germany, January 7, 1837. While still a small boy, he immigrated with his parents to province of Ontario, Canada, where he received his common school education.
In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Esther Ecchert, and to this union 13 children were born, 10 of whom are still living.
Nearly a half century ago, he came with his wife to northern Indiana and soon thereafter became converted and became united with the Mennonite church near Locke. About twenty years ago he became united with the Wakarusa Christian church, remaining a faithful member until his death. Christianity to him was more than a theory, it was a practical possession to be lived everyday. He loved to sing and for many years sang in the choir of the church. He was always faithful in his attendance on the services of the church, especially the prayer meetings.
During his long life, he was a farmer, druggist and hardware merchant, and in all his business dealings he applied the principals of Christianity.
Besides the wife, there survives 2 brothers & 2 sisters, Jacob of Nappanee, John of Middlebury, Mrs Elizabeth Yoder of Elkhart & Mrs Lydia Hess of Harrison Center;
10 children, Jacob, Samuel, Charles, Mrs Mary Whisler and Esther Berger, all of Wakarusa, Mrs Agnes Tobias of Nappanee, Mrs Susie Flickinger of Elkhart, Mrs Alice Green of South Bend, Miss Lizzie of South Bend & Mrs Belle Houser of David City, Nebraska; 25 grandchildren and a host of other relatives, neighbors & friends.
The funeral services were held from the Christian church, Rev Arthur E Cobb officiating. Burial was given in Olive cemetery.
