    • BARDWELL, Horace (Short) - Passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday July 4, 1999 of a heart attack at the Royal Alex Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta. He was born in Chester, Nova Scotia, raised in Lowstoff, England and came to Galt in 1928. He will be remembered for opening the first Canadian Tire Store in Galt in 1936, from 1939 to 1945 he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Flying Instructor and later Transport Command from England to the Continent, on returning home to Galt he was a Squadron Leader and Commanding Officer of the Galt Air Cadets for many years. He was involved with the Galt Minor Hockey Association and the Galt Terriers Senior Hockey Team and their Allan Cup Championship in 1961. After selling the Canadian Tire in 1960, he pioneered Galt Business on the Hespeler Highway (Hwy. #24), when he built the Satelitte Motel which was the first of many to follow, other business interests included the first Toyota Dealership in Galt in 1964 and a Marina on Rice Lake in 1968. He was also a member of the Galt Kiwanis Club and the Galt Curling Club. He is survived by his wife Verda (nee Herman), three children Beverly and Bill Adams of Waterloo, George and Susan Bardwell of Cambridge and Bonnie and Bob Dechene of St. Albert, Alberta, 10 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. His passing on the weekend of Canada's 132nd Birthday is a reminder of his love of and service to his country and community. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 9, 1999 at 2 pm at Memory Gardens, Victoria Street (Hwy. #7), Breslau.
