Notes |
- Berlin-born blacksmith Carl Stuebing was among the first to volunteer, days after war broke out in August 1914. He had militia training that he likely wanted to put to use. But he could not know then how long he would be at war.
Wounded earlier in 1918, Stuebing fought at Amiens with a cavalry unit. There his luck finally ran out and he died at 23, killed four years to the day after he enlisted.
