  • Notes
    • The Petoskey Record - Wednesday, February 8, 1911 - Jasper Smith Passes Away After Long Suffering - For over four year Jasper F. Smith has been an almost constant sufferer and for many months was unable to lie down because of asthma, but never-the-less his death which occurred on Sunday shortly after noon came as a terrible shock to those near and dear to him. About a year ago Mr. Smith had one of his eyes badly hurt by a flying chip while he was chopping wood, and partial blindness was added to his other afflictions, so that while his wife, son and daughters grieve because of their own great loss, they can not but be thankful for the happy release of the patient sufferer. Mr. Smith was seventy-eight years old on January 25, and was born in Winterburn, Canada, and he was the last of a family of nine brothers and sisters. He and his good wife were the parents of five children, four daughters, Mrs. Jacob Kalbfleisch, of Levering; Mrs. Alice Ball, Onaway; Mrs. Edward Younglove, Detroit; and Mrs. Alba Woodward, Fairbanks, Washington, and one son., Professor Leslie Smith of the Agricultural College, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Mr. Smith has lived in Petoskey about thirty-five years, and as long as his health permitted worked at his trade as a carpenter, many of the older houses in Petoskey having been built by him. He and his wife have been active consistent workers in the Methodist church for years endeavoring to live their Christian profession in their daily lives. The funeral service was private and was held yesterday from the home with Rev. Manning in charge. Mrs. Smith and the family have the lovingly sympathy of their many friends in their hour of loneliness.
