Notes |
- Charles B. Dunke
Was in Business Nearly 50 years
Veteran Grocery Merchant, ill only few days, was in his 77th year
Ill only since Wednesday, Charles B. Dunke, 73 Benton St., a merchant for nearly 50 years in this city, retiring only last December died at his residence today in his 77th year. Mr. Dunke was born on a farm near Berlin in 1861, a son of the late Reinhart Dunke and Lena Boehmer. He was married on Sept. 2, 1886 to Miss Emma L. Weaver, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Amos Weaver, by Rev. G. Plowman at United Brethren Church. On Sept 2, 1936, they observed their golden wedding anniversary. The year after he was married he established his grocery business on King St. from which he retired at the end of 1936, after nearly 50 years of continued activity. He had the distinction of having been in business longer than any other King St. merchant. The deceased in five decades of business saw many changes in the city. When he first opened his store King St. was a gravel road, he saw the first pavement constructed, the street railway built, and the waterworks established. When he was of the younger merchants, streets and stores were lighted by coal oil lamps and each night at sun down business men of the day paused a moment watching for the lamp lighter to make his rounds. Mr. Dunke also experienced a great revolution in the grocery business since the day when he opened his store. At that time farmers dealings with the store were all in the way of trading. Today, although not eliminated, this system has been greatly curtailed. The deceased also served the community in a public capacity, having been a member of city council at various times. He was an active member of Benton St. Baptist Church, of which he was a former trustee. Surviving are his widow, two daughters, Mrs. E.E. Jacques, Colbourg, Mrs. I. G. Imrie, Kitchener, one son Kenneth, Toronto, one brother, Edwin Dunke, Kitchener, one sister, Ida Dunke, also of Kitchener and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home on Monday afternoon at 2: 30 to Mount Hope Cemetery for interment.
