- DEATH OF DR. MORTON.
Wellesley's Oldest Medical Practitioner Passes Away on Monday Morning.
Dr Wm Morton, one of the oldest and most successful medical practitioners in Waterloo County passed away on Monday morning at his home in Wellesley in his 58th year. He settled in Wellesley some thirty-one years ago and enjoyed a very large practice for many years. He was a man of broad and liberal views and enjoyed in a marked degree the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens. He filled the position of postmaster for the last fifteen or eighteen years, Medical Health Officer of Wellesley Township, and was an active and influential member of the High School Board. Four children survive him, three grown-up daughters and one son, fourteen years of age. One of the daughters is married to Dr. Glaister who has been associated with his father-in-law in his practice for the past three or four years. The funeral will take place (to-day) Thursday.
Waterloo County Chronicle, 19 Jan 1899, p. 4

The site of Wellesley was first occupied by John Smith, a squatter, in 1847. He came in some time prior to the survey. When the post office was established in 1851 it was called Smithville, but the following year the name was changed to Wellesley. William Brown was the first postmaster. Smith was followed by such noted pioneers as Christian Boshart, Charles Ottmann and John Zoeger. The latter was the first merchant and hotel keeper. The building he occupied is the one now owned by Dr William Morton, who uses it for a drug store, post office and private residence.

______________
High School Board.
A meeting of the Berlin High School Board was held last Thursday afternoon. All the members were present, Very little business was done. The treasurer's financial statement was received and pronunced satisfactory. A resolution of condolence with respect as follows:
to the death of Dr. Morton was passed
"That this Board sincerely regrets the death of our late co-worker, Dr. Morton, who during his connection with the Board always manifested a deep interest in the welfare of the High School, and the Board will greatly miss his presence from all meetings, and the Secretary is hereby instructed to forward a copy of this resolution to the family of the deceased,"
Waterloo County Chronicle (186303), 26 Jan 1899, p. 3
__________
MORTON, WILLIAM was Ontario born, and a graduate of the University of Toronto in 1866. He settled in Wellesley in 1868, although the first mention of him is not found until September 1869.
The Berliner Journal of January 20, 1870 carried the account of an indignation meeting held by the inhabitants of Wellesley and surrounding area in support of Dr. Morton. Some un-named villager had for the previous six months attacked his character, both personal and professional, in an undisclosed manner. In his defence a resolution was produced with 98 signatures, including the names of many of the prominent people in the area. This appears to have settled the matter.
Apart from this episode he received little attention from the press, so that little information is available concerning his career.
Politics was one of the outside interests for which he found time, and he was elected Recording Secretary and Treasurer of the North Waterloo Liberal Conservative Association.
On January 16, 1899 he died following a lengthy illness. During the last couple of years his practice was taken over by his son- in-law, Dr. Glaister.
The News Record of January 26, 1899 carried an obituary taken from the Stratford Beacon:
Dr. William Morton, one of the oldest and most successful medical practitioners in Waterloo County, who passed away on Monday morning at his home in Wellesley in his fifty eighth year, settled in Wellesley some thirty one years ago and enjoyed a very large practice for many years, he was a man of broad and liberal views and enjoyed in a marked degree the esteem and confidence of his fellow citizens. He filled the position of postmaster for the past fifteen or eighteen years, medical health officer of Wellesley township and was an active and influential member of the high school board of Berlin. Four children survive him, three grown up daughters and one son fourteen years of age. One of his daughters is married to Dr. Glaister who has been associated with his father- in-law in his practice for the past three or four years.
