- Jacob Bartels "Jake" - Passed away peacefully in Naples, Florida on Saturday, April 5, 2008 surrounded by his two sons after his first ever hospital stay. Jake Bartels, 96 years of age, beloved husband of the late Eleanor Bartels (nee Hartrick) (2003), loving father of Bill (Eileen) of Kitchener, Robert (Marilyn) of Arthur and Audrey (Jim) Gilpin of Goderich. Dear grandfather of Scott (Leslie), Jayne (deceased), Tim (Annemarie), Laura (Jonathan) Huras, Ross (Brenda), Rachael (Jerome) Tottier, Kathryn Gilpin, Bob Gilpin, Nancy (Nilton) Braga, and Andrew Gilpin; dear great grandfather of Jacob, Taylor, Jayne, Daniel, Gregory, Drew and Hannah. Dear brother of Anna Robertson. Predeceased by his parents Jacob J. And Katherine Bartels, and by his sisters Margaret Rempel and Katherine Peters; also survived by his many nieces and nephews. Jake was born in the Russian Ukrain on October 28, 1911. He came to Canada with his family in 1923. He attended Maplegrove School. His fifty years of employment included Crowe Foundry, Dominion Woolens and Worsted, Simplicity Products, Fairfield Woolens, and Ford Motor Company, Oakville. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling the world, working on his many projects and spending time with his family. Jake still enjoyed driving so much that he had just ordered a new Ford. Jake's family will welcome friends at the Lounsbury Funeral Home, 1766 Franklin Boulevard, Cambridge on Friday, April 18 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A celebration of Jake's life will be held in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, April 19th at 1 pm with interment at New Hope Cemetery. Those who wish may make a memorial donation to the Mennonite Central Committee.
