- DR. W. J. FISCHER, M.A.
The recent death of Dr. W. J. Fischer, M.A., of Waterloo, Ontario, has bereft the medical profession of Ontario of not only an exemplary member, but a litterateur of exceptional promise. A graduate of Western University Medical School Class 1902, Dr. Fischer whilst a student published his "Tales by the Wayside". This was followed by five other volumes of poetry and fiction, all of distinct merit. He also contributed largely to various journals and newspapers. Dr. Fischer was a man of high and noble ideals; and impressed all with whom he came in contact by his many-sided character his keen powers of observation, his warm heartedness, his poetic temperament. He was also an accomplished musician. Although a comparatively young man, having scarcely rounded his fortieth year, Dr. Fischer possessed one of the best literary libraries in the province. His whole life was an inspiration, stimulating and ennobling to those who came in contract with him. K. L. G.

____________
FISCHER, WILLIAM J. was born in Waterloo February 1, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Fischer, he attended the local schools, and graduated from the Faculty of medicine of the University of Western Ontario in the class of 1902. After a two year internship at Lt. Joseph's hospital, London, he returned to Waterloo where he went into partnership with Dr. J. H. Webb. In 1911 he withdrew from the partnership and built up a successful practice of his own.
In addition to his regular practice in 1918 he was appointed assistant medical director of the Waterloo Life Assurance Company of Canada.
His chief interests were writing and music, and it is as a writer that he is probably best remembered. While he was still a student he published "Tales of the Wayside", to be followed by five other volumes of poetry and fiction, all of which won recognition, he contributed to various journals and newspapers, and conducted a correspondence with a number of other writers. It was his custom to give copies of his books to interested visitors, a practice which did not earn the approval of his family.
The Daily Record described his other interests in his obituary:
The brilliant poet was a lover of the beautiful in all forms of art. In addition to his literary ability he was a ureat lover of music being a master of the pianoforte as well as the composer of a number of beautiful musical moods to which he never gave publication. In addition to his musical and literary work. Dr.. Fischer took a great delight in the collecting of rare singing birds, his collection being one of the largest and most complete in Canada.
Another collection which he possesses was an outstanding and extensive literary library.
He was a member of the Senate of the University of Western Ontario, the Authors Club of London, England, and the Archeological Society of France. St. Jeromes College of Kitchener, because of his writing, gave him an honorary Master of Arts degree.
In 1919 he became ill with a progressive disease which resulted in his death on August 15. 1920. The deaths earlier in the year of his father, a former mayor of Waterloo, and o his' mother, were considered by some to have hastened his own death, he was survived by his widow, the former Caroline Kuntz, two daughters, and eight brothers and sisters.
