  • Notes
    • DR. CHARLES PHILIP ROLLS (1809-1883)

The fourth child of James Arnold Rolls and Mrs. (Burns) Rolls, Charles Philip was born April 12, 1809, at Weymouth, Dorsetshire, England.
After his parents' death, he was sent to relatives, in France, to be educated.

He travelled to Canada, possibly, with his older brother, Dr. James Arnold Rolls, (1803-1873.)

Records show that on October 24, 1832, he bought a half acre lot in the village of St. Thomas, Upper Canada, (later Ontario.) This property was located on the south side of Talbot Road, (being part of Lot 46) between Centre and Walnut Streets (Yarmouth Township, County of Middlesex, Landon District.) He paid 250 Pounds (Canadian) for the property. Curiously, he bought the property from his brother, Dr. James Arnold Rolls. A deed dated October 22, 1832 shows that Dr. James Arnold Rolls had purchased this same property from a James Clement Crysler for 50 Pounds on July 20, 1832. We do not know why this double transaction took place. Also not known is whether the property included a building.

The deed for the above property shows Charles Rolls (age 23) as a "druggist." There is no mention of his being a physician.

The following advertisement appeared in the St. Thomas "LIBERAL" on 29 Nov 1832

NEW DRUG STORE ST. THOMAS U.C.

The subscriber of St. Thomas begs to inform the inhabitants and the public generally, that he has on hand a large supply of every kind of DRUGS, which will be sold 20 per cent cheaper than at any other store. …
      CHARLES ROLLS.

St. Thomas, corner of Centre and Walnut Streets. November 29, 1832.

      We should note that:-
      (I) Centre Street and Walnut Street in St. Thomas (to-day) are 200 feet apart and are parallel to each other.
      (2) This seems to be the same property that Dr. James Arnold Rolls sold to his brother Charles Rolls on October 24, 1832.
      (3) This Address is the same as that shown for the residence of Dr. James Arnold Rolls and his family in an advertisement dated July 29, 1835 which was the "log house."
      (4) Charles Rolls and his wife sold the property (purchased from Dr. James Arnold Rolls) to a Henry Groves on Feb. 4, 1842.

Dr. James Arnold Rolls gave Henry Groves a mortgage for the property on February 26, 1842.
We should presume, from the above, and other data shown in these memoranda, that James Arnold purchased the property with intent of building a drug store and home on the acre, which he did. He did not operate the drug store we have no advertisements to indicate that he did, but sold the lot, including the drug store (perhaps under construction) to his brother Charles. Dr. James Arnold continued to live in the log house, which he had built, till 1842 when he moved to a frame house. In the meantime, he had opened a drug (etc.) store at another location (see memorandum on Dr. James Arnold Rolls) in or before 1835. Charles and his family moved out of St. Thomas about 1842.

Charles Rolls was issued a license to practice medicine in Upper Canada (later Ontario) on April 10, 1834, and he immediately commenced practise in St. Thomas. (2) It is not clear where he received his medical training. If he received it in France or England, why the delay of 2 years in Canada before receiving his license to practise? It seems more likely that he received at least part of his medical training in Canada but where and how?

Dr. Charles Rolls name appears in records of Port Burwell (40 miles east of St. Thomas, on Lake Erie), Vienna (5 miles north of Port Burwell.)

His name also appears in St. Catharines, Ontario, where a street, Rolls Street, is named for him (2) and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, where he and his partner, a DR. Melville, received fifteen Pounds, five shillings for attendance on cholera patients in 1847 (2). Also in Toronto.

Dr. Charles Rolls was the second appointed clerk of the Township of Mosa in the 1840's until 1852. (Mosa, now Wardsville, Ontario is 30 miles east of Chatham.)

In 1851 Mosa (Wardsville) had a population of about 400. There Dr. Charles Rolls was the only physician and owned the only drug store. He… rest missing

ROLLS, CHARLES was born in England on April 12, 1809. According to Seaborn, he was educated in France and obtained his medical degree in England. In 1834 he was granted his Canadian licence, and began to practice in St. Thomas.

He moved around a good deal and was listed in Port Burwell, Vienna, St. Catharines, (where Rolls Street is named for him), Niagara-on-the-Lake, (where he attended cholera patients in 1847), and later was in Cobourg.

In the 1861 census he was located in New Hamburgh. He was said to be 51 years of age, with two children. There is no further information regarding his length of stay in this area.
