- Charles Haehnel Passes Away In His 93rd Year
Waterloo's Oldest and Beloved Citizen Lover of Books, Music and Floriculture
A host of friends in Waterloo Kitchener and district, learned with sincere regret of the death on Sunday of Charles A. Haehnel, one of its best known and most beloved and popular citizens. He was 92 years old and slept peacefully away about three o'clock Sunday morning at his home, Young St., following a week's illness. He suffered a fractured hip in July, 1936, recovered and enjoyed excellent health until 10 days ago.
Scores of friends attended the funeral services held from the funeral home of Letter & Dreisinger. Interment took place in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rev. C.S. Roberts, pastor of St. John's Lutheran Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. Lloyd Schaus. The pallbearers were: Dr. F.G. Hughes, P.H. Roos, W.D. Brill, Wm. Uffelman, F. Kudoba and E. Dotzert.
The late Mr. Haehnel was born in Germany and came to Canada when a lad and resided in Waterloo nearly his whole life. For forty years he was the efficient accountant in the office of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Co., retiring about 32 years ago. For over forty years he was the treasurer of Germania Lodge No. 184, IOOF. Perhaps his greatest interest was that of the Waterloo Public Library, being a valued member and secretary for over a half century. He retained his interest up to the time of his death being a great lover of books. He was also a lover of music and continued his interest in the Waterloo Musical Society since its organization. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Mr. Haehnel had the distinction of being the second charter member of the Germania Lodge, founded in 1876. He was present at the 60th anniversary held three years ago. In 1935 Mr. and Mrs. Haehnel celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. His beloved wife passed away three years ago. Mr. Haehnel was of a genial disposition and until a few days before his death, alert of mind, and keenly interested in local and world events. He was a lover of his garden and flowers and gave it his personal attention until his accident in 1936.
Surviving are two children Floral, Mrs. Harry Glinz, of Detroit, Alfred G. Haehnel, Waterloo druggist, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. One son, Nelson, accountant of Toronto, died many years ago.
