Notes |
- Death of Mr. James Elliott, Of Beverly
There died at his residence on the 9th Con., Township of Beverly, at an early hour on Monday morning last, one of the oldest and most respected residents of the Township in the person of Mr. James Elliott. The deceased had for a long time past been in but poor health, and his decease was not therefore unexpected. He was in the 86th year of his age which his earthly account was closed.
Mr. Elliott was born in Liddesdale, Roxburghshire, Scotland, and came to Canada in 1810[sic]. He at once took up the farm in Beverly where he was since continuously resided. Settlers were then one by one drifting into the Township, and in the work of reclaiming it from a wilderness Mr. Elliott took his full part. The work of a pioneer always tests true manhood; but in every relation the subject of this notice exhibited the sterling characteristics of the country from which he sprang. He lived to see the wilderness subdued until it "blossoms like a rose"; and in the fullness of a ripe old age he has folded his hands on his breast and fallen into the sleep that knows o awakening in this world.
Mr. Elliott was married in Scotland, and his aged partner in life still survives him. He leaves a family of seven, five sons and two daughters, viz.: - William, living in Iowa; John and Adam, living in Texas, the latter being now on a visit here; Thomas G. in California; James, living on the homestead; a daughter, Jane, also residing on the homestead; and Mrs. Buchan, living in Iowa.
The funeral took place on Wednesday, the remains being interned in Galt cemetery. The attendance was very large, plainly showing the esteem in which the deceased was held by those amongst whom he had lived for so many years.
