    • Woman co-founded local humane society

The woman who was thought to be Waterloo Region's oldest citizen, died Thursday at Golden Years Nursing Home in Cambridge. Rosa Jones was 106. "She lived to a very good age," her daughter, Melba Nelles, said this morning. Born in Herefordshire, England, in 1882, Mrs. Jones moved to Canada at age 25 and spent most of her life in Cambridge. She had a busy life, volunteering most of her time to community work. "She was so involved in so many things," said Mrs. Nelles, who lives in Cambridge. "She used to go down and pack parcels at the legion for the war effort. She took up a cause and gave everything." A devout Christian, Mrs. Jones co-founded the local humane society, devoted much time to the Conservative party and served as a poll clerk in municipal and federal elections. When she found time, Mrs. Jones liked to work in the garden and write poetry. "She had a fantastic memory," Mrs. Nelles said. "She could recite poetry that she learned in school. " Mrs. Jones loved Cambridge, Mrs. Nelles said. "It was very dear to her." She spent the last 20 years of her life in nursing homes. Her husband, Daniel, died close to 40 years ago. In addition to Mrs. Nelles, Mrs. Jones is survived by a son, Lloyd, who lives in Toronto. She also leaves grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. A private funeral was to be held this afternoon.
