- BELOVED CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH
Jacob Winkler Was Well Known -Figure In Insurance Circles; Retired From Active Service In 1914
Jacob Winkler, one of Waterloo's well known and highly esteemed citizens passed away this morning at his home, 40 Elgin street, following an Illness of only a few days duration. Mr. Winkler had been in good health up to Sunday when be he became ill and went to bed. He gradually sank and the end came at about 2 o'clock this morning, at the ripe old 78 years, 11 months and 25 days.
The late Mr. Winkler was born in Woolwich township, near St. Jacobs on March 18, 1845. His early days wore spent on his father's farm, but in 1876 he moved to Waterloo with his wife, who predeceased him three years ago, where he has lived ever since. Soon after coming to Waterloo he entered the employ of the Mutual Life Assurance Company chief clerk. In fact he was the first member of the clerical staff of this insurance company which today numbers over a hundred.
In the fall of 1914 he was superannuated by the company after 37 years of faithful service. During this long period of useful service to his company he always performed his duties in a most there manner to the entire satisfaction of directors, management, agents, policyholders and all with whom his work brought him in contact. At the time of his retirement from active service he was presented with a fine gold watch, chain and locket by the officials and staff of the Mutual Life who paid him a splendid tribute by quoting the words of a member of the Royal Commission appointed to investigate life insurance companies in 1906 who stated that Mr. Winkler's books were the best of all books which they had gone over, being remarkable for their clearness, neatness and legibility.
Since his superannuation in 1914 he has lived a quiet retired life at his home on Elgin street, where he cultivated about two acres of land. His splendid garden was his hobby in the declining days of his long life. Mr. Winkler took a keen interest in horticulture generally and was well read on botanical subjects.
The late Mr. Winkler is survived by his four children as follows: Hannah and Josephine at home, George st Waterloo and Alonso of Bridgeford, Sask. Two brothers and three sisters also mourn his loss as follows: William, St. Jacobs, John, Markham, Margaret and Regina at St. Jacobs and Mrs. Bender of Wallace, Ont.
The funeral will be held privately from his late residence, 46 Elgin street, on Monday afternoon at three o'clock to Mount Hope cemetery for interment.
