  • Notes
    • BROOMFIELD, James Alexander

Passed away at St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Saturday, March 16, 2013, in his 101st year. Jim was born on December 1, 1912, in Galt, Ontario, to the late James and Annie (Wolfe) Broomfield. He was predeceased by Rose, his beloved wife of 72 years, on March 9, 2013 and by a son, Peter James, in May, 1946. Loved Father of Barbara (Joe) Nowak of Wellesley and cherished Papa to Kate (Duncan) Gibson of Etobicoke and Meg (Mike) Gardner of Sault Ste. Marie. Great Pa to Willow Gibson. Jim Broomfield was a proud member of the Algonquin Regiment of Canada and served during WW2 in France, Belgium and Holland. He became a POW after he was captured in October, 1944. Jim began the sport of curling at the age of 16 and he has been active every winter since 1932, except during the war. That start led to appearances in five provincial play-downs. Jimmie was an enthusiastic supporter of his favourite Yankees and Leafs and he coached minor baseball and hockey teams. James Broomfield will be inducted into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame on May 4th. Jim has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion - Branch 121, for more than 6 decades. He has been an active member of the Cambridge Lions Club since 1950 and was honored for his service by receiving the Melvin Jones award, Helen Keller award and Life Membership. Jim also spent many years volunteering for the Cancer Society, driving patients to treatments and was still participating in the Relay for Life in his 90's. He was honored at the 2010 Ontario Volunteer Service Awards, for his 60 years of service to his community. Jimmie was a Member of the Liberal Party of Canada and an avid follower of politics right up until his last day. Above all, Jim was a loving and caring Husband, Father and Grandfather, for whom family came first. His positive attitude, great sense of humour and friendship to those of all ages will be dearly missed. Friends will be received at Coutts Funeral Home, 96 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge, on Tuesday, March 19, 2013, from 2: 00-4: 00 p.m. and 7: 00 - 9: 00 p.m.
