    • KILLED INSTANTLY

A Cable Breaks and the Hoist at the Goldie & McCulloch Co's. Works, falls on James Hammond.

On Saturday morning last, about 10 o'clock, the Goldie & McCulloch Co's., moulding shop was the scene of a sad accident, which resulted in the instant death of Mr. James Hammond, aged 23 years. Mr. Hammond was piling up a load of pig iron near the hoist and one of the pieces fell into the pit where the hoist descends. He stooped down into the pit to pick this piece out and just as he was getting out he called "All right" to Mr. Flatt, the cupola man, but at this instant the cable wire used to lower and elevate the hoist broke, allowing the hoist which weighs about half a ton, with Mr. Flatt in it, to fall from a distance of about 10 or 12 feet, on the unfortunate man, killing him instantly. Deceased was in the employ of the Goldie & McCulloch Co., as teamster, since last March and in that time he made many friends among his fellow workmen. He was born at Paisley Block, where his father now lives and leaves a wife and one child to mourn his untimely death. His death was the result of a pure accident and no blame can possibly be attached to anyone. The funeral took place on Monday morning, from his late residence West Main St., to Guelph cemetery, by the G. T. R. The remains were followed to the Galt station by the employees of the foundry in a body. The pall bearers were Bros. P. Moran, Hamersley, Wm. Howie, W. McDonald, W. McKenzie and W. Moran of Court Aberfoyle I. 0. F., to which deceased belonged. Several members of Court Valley City, 1. O. F., attended the funeral.
