- WM. CONRAD PASSES AWAY
Waterloo's Oldest Business Man and Prominent Citizen Dies in 77th Year.
MEMBER OF HARDWARE FIRM FOR 64 YEARS
After a successful business career of 64 years, William Conrad, aged 76, of Conrad's Hardware, oldest established business in Waterloo, passed peacefully away at the family residence, 29 Young St., Waterloo, early Wednesday morning, Oct. 31st, after being confined to bed for a week. He had been in failing health for some months but was able to give some attention to business until several weeks ago. He was one of Waterloo's best known and public spirited citizens and for many years gave valued civic service as a member of the School Board, Town Council, Board of Trade, and other public bodies. He was a prominent Lutheran taking an active part in the work at the St. John's Church where he was a member of the board of management and choir for a long term of years. A lover of sports, he enjoyed lawn bowling, curling, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge A.F. and A.M. The funeral will take place from the residence on Friday at 2: 30 p.m. for service thence to Mount Hope cemetery for interment. The remains will rest at the funeral home of Letter & Dreisinger until Thursday noon. Rev. C. S. Roberts, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran Church, will officiate. The late William Conrad was the eldest son of the late Jacob and Mrs. Conrad, the founder of the oldest hardware company in Waterloo County. The firm established in 1857 passed to the control of William and Jacob Conrad on the death of their father. He learned the hardware business starting at the age of 13 and in 1899 on the retirement of his father, became the senior partner in the firm. He was married at Hespeler to Miss Bertha Englehardt, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Louis Englehardt in 1884. Their union was blessed with a family of four daughters, Misses Nelda and Edith at home, Clara, Mrs. Gordon Brain of Flint, Mich, and Lorraine, Mrs. Fred F. Hughes of Waterloo. One daughter Edna, Mrs. Musselman, died at Windsor a few years ago. Besides the widow and daughters there survive six sisters, Mrs. Conrad Huehnergard, Mrs. Elizabeth Sanderson, Mrs. Otillia Wiedenhammer and Mrs. Elias Frey all of Waterloo, and Mrs. J. Herbert Smith and Miss Caroline Conrad of Chicago and one grandchild.
