Notes |
- Succumbed to His Injuries
In our issue of two weeks ago we mentioned that a serious accident had occurred to Mr. Harry B. Wells, an employee in Mr. Peter Hay's machine knife works in this town, who unfortunately let a heavy knife he was finishing for a paper cutter slip from his grasp, the keen edge striking him on the upper side of the knee-cap and literally shaving it off with the exception of the skin on the inner side of the leg. At the time we mentioned that there were fears that the accident would result in the stiffening of Mr. Wells' limb; but the actual result has been the loss of his life. The wound from the first caused the unfortunate man terrible suffering and last week symptoms of mortification set in. His medical attendants then decided that the only hope of saving his life was in the amputation of the injured limb, and this was accordingly done on Friday afternoon last. The sufferer never rallied from the shock, however, but passed away about ten hours after the operation had been performed.
Mr. Wells' funeral on Sabbath afternoon was very largely attended the Salvation Army, (of which deceased was or had been a member) attending in a body with their Band, which played the "dead march" as the cortege passed on its way to the cemetery. Mr. Wells leaves a wife and five children, and we regret to say in very poor circumstances.
