    • DEATH OF A FORMER GALTONIAN IN MICHIGAN - The gentleman referred to in the following paragraph from an Ionia, Mich., paper, will be remembered by many of our readers. He was a nephew of Mr. Duncan Shepherd, Sr., of this town, and learned the harness and saddlery business with Mr. Wm. Quarrie: - "Duncan Shepherd died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Nelson Collar, in Vergennes, Kent County, on Monday, and was buried there on Wednesday. The news of Mr. Shepherd's death will be re received by Ionians with sincere sorrow. He was born at Argyle, Washington County, New York in 1827, and when a boy removed to Canada, where he learned his trade. In 1857 he removed to Kalamazoo, where he remained a few months, and then came to Ionia, where he has since made his home. He engaged in the harness and saddlery business with James Crothers, whom he was associated with for several years. Since their dissolution he conducted the business alone until a few months ago, when failing health obliged him to seek rest from active business. As a politician Mr. Shepherd was a staunch Republican; as a business man, of the strictest integrity, honorable in all his dealings; as a citizen he won the confidence and esteem of the people by his unostentatious manner; and as a friend he was ever true and faithful. His death was like passing into a quiet slumber. His memory will long be cherished by his Ionia associates, who will sadly miss his kindly greeting and his genial companionship.
