- ANOTHER PIONEER GONE
The death of F. L. Scheuremann, one of Waterloo county's oldest pioneers, occurred at his residence, Erb street, Waterloo, on Sunday, December 10th, 1899, after four weeks' illness, at the age of 84 years, 5 months and 25 days. The funeral took place from his late residence, Erb street, on Wednesday, Dec. 13. at 2 o'clock p m., to Mount Hope cemetery. He leaves a sorrowing widow, two sons and four daughters to mourn his loss.
The late F. L. Scheuermann was born on June 15th, 1815, in Hohnheim, Germany. In 1842 he came to America and settled in Waterloo county, in the village of Lexington. Here he was employed for several years with John Wissler as a tanner. From here he went to Phillipsburg, where he, in company with Christopher Doering, was engaged for five years in the tannery business conducting & shoe business at the same time. In 1849 he bought a farm in Bridgeport, which he still owns. Here he built a tannery and was engaged as tanner for over twenty-five years. In 1875 he started a store business in Bridgeport in which he was engaged for ten years, From here he went he went to Milverton, and for four years conducted a store there. In 1889 he took up farming on the old premises on the Bridgeport road. He then built a fine barn on the former tannery site. Here he lived up to March, 1899, when he moved to Waterloo.
In 1844 he was married to Eliza Schaefer, who came from German; the year following Mr. Scheurmann. She still survives. The fruits of this marriage were five children, four of whom are still living, viz.: Henry A. Scheurmann, of May City, Iowa; Marie Sophia, of Denver, Colorado; Levi, at home, and Mrs. C. R. Maler, of this town, besides twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
On coming to Canada Mr. Scheuremann joined the New Jerusalem church, and has been a devoted member ever since. The bereaved widow and family have the sympathy of the community in this their hour of trial.
